Ice sculptures

Posted in Frosted Gardens, Ice sculptures, Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Winter with tags , , , , on February 1, 2015 by Amanda

I went to Saskatoon today which came close to doubling the number of kilometres on my odometer.  Besides the usual shopping, I saw ice sculptures at what was called Frosted Gardens.  They were interesting but they were smaller than I’d thought they might be and the ice maze was tiny; I’m sure even little kids could figure it in one try.  It didn’t take long to look at everyone which was good as it was -19 and the windchill must have been quite a bit colder.  Here are a couple of pictures:

January impersonating spring

It has been shockingly warm here for the last  while.  Yesterday morning, I was actually surprised that I survived the walk across my parking lot; it was so icy!  This afternoon, it reached +7 though the wind made it feel a bit colder.  If I didn’t know better, I’d think it was spring.  However, colder weather is supposed to be coming in a few days though thankfully not -30ish cold. I was convinced to suspend my laziness and went on a walk this afternoon.  The sidewalks were highly variable; some were clear and even dry while others were a complete mess.  If people actually shovelled their sidewalks, walking would be much more pleasant!

I can finally feel my fingers again!

They weather has finally approved after a prolonged period of frigid temperatures (-30ish).  It is so nice to go outside and be able to feel my fingers.   In the winter that is all I really ask for.  The temperature actually was positive today.  Some people were actually complaining that the warm temperature was making too big of mess.  Yes, it makes a mess but it is a million times better than dealing with -30 so I really don’t think the complaints are really warranted.

Not much has been going on (other than work, of course) but I did get a new car a couple of weeks ago.  It is a Hyundai Elantra GT.  So far, I really like the car but getting it completely ready was much more of an ordeal than it should have been but I won’t get into that story.

Strange snow removal method

Posted in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Snow removal, Weather, Winter with tags , , , , on November 27, 2014 by Amanda

I’ve seen a strange snow removal method several times since I’ve lived here.  Today, I actually bothered to take pictures.  Anyway, they create medians of snow in the middle of the street and then they close a block at a time to remove these medians.  It was a bit annoying getting to work this morning as I had to make a U-turn because of the snow median.  At least, that section of the road wasn’t closed yet.  My staff claim that this method is common in many communities in Saskatchewan but it still seems bizarre to me!

I really don’t have anything else to say except that I’m not happy with this development.
