Curling + The Weather

Posted in Curling, Happy Valley - Goose Bay, Labrador, Snow, Weather, Winter with tags , , , , , on November 26, 2011 by Amanda

I went curling last night for the first time. I was a bit unsure about going but as I’ve been rather bored and most things here seemed to be focused on alcohol or church I decided to go. Luckily there were a number of other people there who hadn’t curled before. I actually was fairly enjoyable though I did end up with a couple pretty sizable bruises beneath my knees. I was surprised at how fast you need to move on the ice when sweeping. It certainly doesn’t look that fast on television!

It also snowed a bit here, nothing insane but enough to feel like winter to me though I kept being told that this isn’t actually winter. I don’t think the snow congregated in the trees as much as it did the time I didn’t manage to take any pictures. Nevertheless, here is a picture:

It has been a bit warmer the past few days after having windchills around -20. It really only bothered me one day when it was really windy. I know it will get much colder here soon; hopefully, I’ll be able to acclimatize to the weather here.

The sky

One thing I have found very different here (that I actually quite like) is how beautiful the sky often is. Here are a couple examples:

Weird Search Terms, Part 3

Posted in Blog, Search terms with tags , on November 12, 2011 by Amanda

As I have been enjoying another ever so exciting weekend, I ended up looking through the stats on this blog. In particular, I looked through the search terms that led people to this blog and found some surprising search terms. I also realized that I haven’t written a post on this since back in April 2010. So, here are some of the weirdest search terms I found:

• amanda escort abu dhabi
• april lane’s blog abu dhabi
• mrakodrap
• mall hujan di mall abu dhabi
• happy dhabi new picher
• hiking at thai easter island
• salik bird food

Remembrance Day = Statutory Holiday

Posted in Canada, Provinces, Remembrance DAy, Statutory holidays with tags , , , on November 11, 2011 by Amanda

In this province Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday so I’m sitting here in my pajamas at nearly noon instead of being at work. In Ontario it was always just a day of work or school. I was surprised to find that Newfoundland and Labrador is actually more typical as the only provinces that don’t have Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday are Ontario and Quebec. It looks like Ontario is actually pretty stingy on statutory holidays as I will have some statutory holidays next year that I had never even heard of! I’m certainly not complaining though.

It’s so dark!

Now that the time has changed, it is getting dark so early here. It was already getting dark when I left work at 4 pm. I guess this is a reminder of just how far north it is here. It was light going to work this morning for the first time in a while but I preferred to have the dark in the morning. At least, the weather hasn’t been too bad yet!
